Mission of the organisation
BirdLife Malta’s mission is the protection of wild birds and their habitats.
Key Activities
- Campaigning to end illegal hunting and trapping as well as spring hunting on the Maltese
- Managing two nature reserves and an afforestation project to provide better habitat for birds and wildlife
- Researching and collecting data (including through bird ringing) on Malta’s birds to enable better conservation
- Identifying Important Bird Areas so they can be designated as Special Protection Areas under the EU Birds Directive
- Publishing research and disseminate information about the birds of Malta, including the Breeding Bird Atlases for the Maltese Islands
- Running the largest conservation project on the Maltese Islands. The EU LIFE Seabirds project, seeking to identify marine Important Birds Areas for Cory’s shearwater, Yelkouan shearwater and the European Storm Petrel
- Delivering Dinja Wahda (One World), an education programme reaching 90% of Maltese primary schools
